Trackman iO vs iO DUO: Which Ceiling-Mounted Launch Monitor Fits Your Room

6 min read

The Trackman iO vs iO DUO decision usually comes down to two things: how wide your room is and who will be hitting. The iO is a single ceiling-mounted unit that Trackman recommends for rooms around 4.6 m wide or more, while the iO DUO uses two units to cover narrower bays, down to about 10 feet (3 m), and right and left handed players without moving any hardware.

Both are indoor only launch monitors that sit in the ceiling above the hitting area, so there is nothing on the floor to trip over or get hit. This guide compares the two on room size, handedness, ceiling height, cost and software, so you can see which one suits your space before you speak to an installer.

Trackman iO vs iO DUO: What Is the Difference?

The technology is the same. The difference is the number of units and where they sit above the hitting area.

The iO is one unit. The iO DUO is two units mounted side by side, which widens the area the system can read and lets it track a player standing on either side of the bay. Trackman describes the DUO as suited to bays as narrow as 10 feet and to both right and left handed golfers.

A note on handedness: Trackman's room guide says a width of 4.6 m or more lets a single iO accommodate both right and left handed play if needed, while at least one retailer comparison lists mixed handedness as requiring the DUO configuration. Layouts differ, so confirm your exact room with Trackman or your installer.

Prices are US list or retailer figures converted at roughly 3.67 AED to the dollar. Installed prices are higher once the enclosure, screen, projector, computer and installation are added.

How Do the iO and iO DUO Measure the Shot?

Each unit combines a 24 GHz radar, a high speed camera and an infrared system, and no markers are needed on the club or ball. Ball data, including 3D spin and spin axis, is measured on every edition. Club data such as club speed, face angle and attack angle depends on the licence tier.

The units are compact, at roughly 333 x 333 x 107 mm and 3.9 kg each, and mount to the ceiling on a standard VESA fitting or a drop down pole. For a longer look at the sensing and the data, see our guide to what the Trackman iO is and who it is for.

Which Room Width Suits the iO and Which Suits the DUO?

Width is the main practical question. Trackman recommends a width of 4.6 m or more for the iO and points to the DUO as a better fit when the room is narrower than that.

One retailer guide publishes three DUO mounting positions that change with room width:

  • Rooms about 11 ft 6 in to 14 ft wide: units roughly 3 ft 7 in apart.

  • Rooms about 10 ft 4 in to 11 ft 6 in wide: units roughly 4 ft 3 in apart.

  • Rooms about 9 ft 6 in to 10 ft 4 in wide: units roughly 4 ft 11 in apart.

Those spacings come from a single retailer, so treat them as a guide and not a specification. The narrow end of the range, about 2.9 m, is tight for most golfers once you allow for a full swing, so measure the real swing space and not only the wall to wall width. Our golf simulator space requirements guide covers how to measure a room for width, depth and ceiling.

Does Ceiling Height Change Between the Two?

Not by much. Trackman's room guide gives a ceiling of 3.0 m (10 ft) or more for the iO, and one retailer review quotes a mounting range of 9 ft 4 in to 10 ft above the hitting surface. For the DUO, a retailer review gives a minimum of 9 ft 4 in (2.85 m).

In a UAE villa or apartment, standard ceilings are often close to these figures, so a drop down pole or a lowered section of ceiling can matter. Check the ceiling height at the hitting position and not only at the room entrance.

How Much More Does the iO DUO Cost?

Trackman lists the iO from USD 13,995 for home solutions, which is about AED 51,400. A retailer review lists the iO DUO from USD 17,495 for the Home edition to USD 25,995 for the Complete edition, which is about AED 64,300 to AED 95,500.

At the Home edition level, the DUO sits about USD 3,500 above the iO, or roughly AED 12,900. That is not a like for like comparison, because the editions include different licences, so ask for the exact edition and what it includes.

Software is a recurring cost on top of the hardware. One retailer review puts Trackman's annual software subscription at roughly USD 700 to USD 1,100 depending on tier, with club data on the higher tier. Confirm current figures with Trackman before you budget.

Which Software Do the iO and iO DUO Run?

Both run on Trackman Performance Studio, which includes Virtual Golf 3 and practice and analysis tools. Software compatibility is a launch monitor question, so if you want a specific third party title, confirm it is supported on the iO line before you buy. For how the iO compares with Trackman's portable unit, see Trackman 4 vs Foresight QuadMAX.

Which One Should You Choose?

The choice follows from your room and your players:

  • Choose the iO if the room is about 4.6 m wide or more, the ceiling is at least 3.0 m, and you want the lowest entry price in the iO line.

  • Choose the iO DUO if the bay is narrower than about 4.6 m, or if right and left handed players will share the bay and you want no repositioning.

  • Get a site measurement before deciding if you are close to either limit, since a few centimetres of width or ceiling can change the answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Trackman iO DUO just two iO units?

It uses two iO sensor units mounted in the ceiling, working together as one system. The pair widens the area that can be read and handles both right and left handed players.

Can a single iO be used by left handed golfers?

Trackman's room guide says a room 4.6 m wide or more can accommodate both right and left handed play if needed. A retailer comparison lists mixed handedness as needing the DUO configuration, so confirm for your layout.

What is the narrowest room the iO DUO works in?

Trackman states bays as narrow as 10 feet, about 3 m. A retailer guide lists a minimum width of 9 ft 6 in with the units at their widest spacing.

Does the iO need a minimum ceiling height?

Trackman's room guide gives a ceiling of 3.0 m (10 ft) or more. A retailer review quotes a mounting range of 9 ft 4 in to 10 ft above the hitting surface.

Can the iO or iO DUO be used outdoors?

No. Both are designed for permanent indoor simulator bays.

Do they need markers on the ball or club?

No. The radar, camera and infrared system read the shot without markers.

How much does an iO DUO cost in AED?

Retailer listings of USD 17,495 to USD 25,995 convert to roughly AED 64,300 to AED 95,500 for the launch monitor alone. Installed prices are higher, and software is charged separately.

Which software do they run?

Trackman Performance Studio, including Virtual Golf 3. Confirm support before buying if you want a specific third party title.
